Communications/Transportation Team PDF Print E-mail

TransportationDEFINITION: The procuring and oversight of trucks, vans, and drivers who can act as lines of communication as well as transporting goods and people as needed. The use of designated ham and various types of radios to assist in communication from the church to other churches as well as to county resources.

THE NEED: After disaster transportation IS often the mode of communication. There is likely no phone communication (cell or land line). Also, there is a need to transport donated goods to your church, transport goods from your church to areas of the neighborhood, and transport people with needs, but who are without transportation due to the disaster etc. etc.

VOLUNTEER NEEDS: Men and women who are committed to being available to transport people and goods during the first couple of weeks after a disaster. Someone who can commit to being the radio operator (either a mobile radio or someone living close to the church or your base) to connect both with the other churches and the county when needed.

PRE-HURRICANE:

  • Determine what vans and trucks you will (hopefully) have available and dedicated for your use realizing some may become unavailable due to the disaster.
  • Have a team of drivers committed to being available.
  • Plan on needed supplies (besides full gas tanks and extra gas) such as flat tire kits etc.
  • Know your neighborhood and the city and have good maps for when there are no street signs (GPS)
  • Have your plan concerning radio use
  • Make sure you have people trained in radio use
  • Your radio operator(s) should be in connection with operators from other local churches and know the appropriate procedure to be in touch with the local Emergency Management
